English

This Term: Autumn 1

Our English lessons will be a whirlwind of creativity! We will explore narrative writing techniques through the magical story of Aladdin.

Aladdin (Narrative Writing)

In this narrative writing topic, lessons concentrate on the teaching of writing with a sharp focus on the craft and
construction of sentences. Each Sentence Stacking lesson is organised into three learning
chunks. Sentences created by pupils are celebrated and examples used to form a large
class Sentence Stack. This Sentence Stack is then built up over the duration of the unit to display a whole piece of narrative text.

Also in our narrative writing unit, we strive to make lessons immersive to stimulate ideas. Experience lessons which take many forms are intergrated into this unit to strengthen context and build imagination.

The Wizard of Once (Newspaper Article)

Get ready for an interactive project where we’ll write newspaper articles based on our reading of The Wizard of Once and an article featuring Mr. Chapman’s famous class mascots! Can Year 4 crack the case of the missing mascots?

Find the Shape
At the beginning of a unit we read a model non-fiction example. Pupils are helped to understand article writing as a visual, jigsaw style shape.

In this unit we concentrate on writing with a sharp focus on the craft and
construction of sentences. Each Sentence Stacking lesson is organised into three learning
chunks. Sentences created by pupils are celebrated and examples used to form a large
class Sentence Stack. Pupils will then be able to write their own newspaper article focusing on Mr Chapman's missing mascot's.

Following this, we will explore the beauty of Poetry based on the beautiful Poem The River followed by taking on the challenge of writing a persuasive letter - inviting Father Christmas to School . Our Reading Book Study this term is anchored by The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo, fostering a love and passion for literature. We also have SPAG everyday where children delve into a multitude of challenges enhancing their spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills.
