Mini Mappers
In Geography this term, the children will become “Mini Mappers” as they begin to explore how we understand and represent the world around us. They will learn about the four compass points and practise giving simple directions, as well as discovering how maps use scale to show things smaller than they are in real life. Through fun, practical activities such as walking routes around the playground, children will create their own sketch maps and begin to use keys and symbols. They will also be introduced to simple fieldwork, where they will collect and present data, ask questions, and draw their own conclusions about what they find.
History
Local Area - Rainford
The children will learn about their local area and compare how it looks now with the past. They will explore and identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods and develop an understanding of significant historical events, people and places in their own locality. They will discover the significance of farming, coal mining, Muncaster Hall and the railway.
DT
Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch Box
This Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch Box unit gives children the opportunity to develop their understanding of structures. The exploration of different types of lunch boxes gives children the experience and information to draw on when developing their own ideas. The children create their ideas following the design criteria, given at the beginning of the project, and go on to create models from reclaimed materials. Children gain a basic understanding about how structures can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable. At the end of the unit children test their products and suggest further improvements.
Art
Sculpture with 3D - Clay Houses
This unit focuses on teaching pupils to shape and decorate clay, create a pinch pot, design and make a clay tile with house features. It emphasises practical skills in working with clay and applying artistic techniques in a structured project.
